WE'VE GOT YOU COVERED!

To measure for legal minimum tread depth of 2/32"

  • Pinch the penny so that the words "In God We Trust" and the top of Lincoln's head are showing
  • Place the top of Lincoln's head into one of the tire tread grooves
  • If you can see above Lincoln's head, or see any of the "In God We Trust" letters, then your tire tread is less than 2/32" of an inch)
  • If any of Lincoln's hair is covered you have more than 2/32"" left of tread in that location.
  • Repeat the steps in other grooves of the tread -- tires can wear differently in different places

Consumer Reports  recommends that you begin thinking about purchasing new tires when your tread depth reaches 4/32".

To measure for 4/32" replace your penny with a quarter.

  • Insert the quarter into the tire tread head first.
  • If the top of George Washington's head is covered you have a tread depth of at least 4/32".
  • Repeat the steps in other grooves of the tread -- tires can wear differently in different places.

You can also stop by Martin Dodge Jeep Chrysler Ram and one of our friendly Service Advisors will measure your tread depth for you.

Having sufficient tread depth to displace water on the the roadway greatly impacts the distance needed to stop your vehicle.

At the point the Worn (4/32") tires have stopped, the Legal Minimum (2/32") car is still traveling at 45 MPH.
